Summer Fun

DUNSBOROUGH MARGARET RIVER YALLINGUP EAGLE BAY

Woah, my biggest problem in January in the South-West is what to choose from! Between spending time in nature, soaking up all the beach weather, to all the events and festivals, it is hard to keep up. I do love the energy down here at this time of year. The sun’s out, the water is glistening and everyone, locals, and visitors alike, are ready for a good time.

It is also school holidays so any event that is kids friendly and outdoors is a bonus. We headed to three major events this January to keep ourselves and the kids entertained, as well as ALL the beach time and park time we could find! Lucky for us there are awesome beaches and parks everywhere you look in the South-West.

First off the ranks was, Taj’s Small Fries surfing comp. As one of Western Australia’s biggest junior surfing events, it draws all the local talent and plenty of local bystanders to cheer the kids along.  There was an abundance of atmosphere. We got to see some local grommet shred and in between, we lounged on the beach and ducked into the crystal waters of Yallingup beach for a swim. The whole family enjoyed it and the location kept everyone entertained for hours.

We also drove over to check out the Margaret River Ocean Swim at Gnarabup Beach. This awesome event is open to anyone that can swim, making it super inclusive and all about encouragement and giving it a go. With spot prizes and a huge crowd, it is fun for everyone. We had a great time and even snuck in a coffee and some snacks from the White Elephant Cafe. This gorgeous little café is set right on the beach and provides the perfect spot for some people watching and a bite to eat.

Our final spot was at the Karridale Circus Festival. This is a big event and tickets are required but it has something for everyone from little kids thru to us adults. The kids did circus school and checked out some shows while the adults took turns to head to the bar and some of the more risqué circus acts on offer. We only went for one day, but this is a two-day event, and if you are up for some serious partying there is a DJ tent that plays music into the early hours of the morning!! It was a crazy, fun, wild carnival ride of an event; we had a lot of fun and so did the kids. Double bonus in my eyes!
