The Secret is Out

Having lived in the South-West region my whole life I have long held the winter months as a special time. I love the mist over the vineyards, warm artisanal coffee, freshly baked bread, and lazy lunches by the fire. I have a feeling the secret is out. Every year I notice more and more people are holidaying down here over Makuru (June-July on the Indigenous calendar).

It’s an amazing time to tune into natures wildness, watch the landscape turn a lush green and the added benefit of having your pick of the many, many, many wineries, restaurants, breweries, and distilleries on offer, isn’t bad either. I love that we can pop down the road with family for a cider and burger or head out on an adult only adventure for award winning gourmet experiences. The region really has it all, catering for whatever style of food, booze and views you can ask for!

In my last post I briefly mentioned wineries with fireplaces and dropped a few local tips on places to visit. But I’ve been enjoying all the region has to offer a lot lately and despite having lived in the area all my life, I have been blown away by the quality experiences on offer. With the South-West being known for its Cab Sav’s, winter also gives me the perfect excuse to revel in this delicious varietal with any meal. So, without further ado, see my list below of places whose food, booze and views have really nailed it for me lately.

You can’t go past Leeuwin Estate and Vasse Felix for special occasions and a food and wine experience that consistently sets the benchmark. This is fine dining at its best, a great excuse to get dressed up and give your taste buds an award-winning treat.

With customer experience at the forefront of their minds the views and roaring fireplaces at Swings & Roundabout and Arimia Estate are worth the visit. Both wineries offer exceptional food, cellar door tastings and more.

If you’re after a hand-crafted beer and a pub lunch check out the Craft Beer Trail. Extending some 135 kms and at last count with 13 breweries on the list, there is something for everyone. Two of our top picks are Wild Hop Brewing Company and the Black Brewing Company. See you there!
